In this project based course, your instructor begins with sharing her experience and passion for photographign creatures that can sometimes be unpredictable but always fascinating. Through a combination of field trips, assignments, discussions and critiques you explore the modern genres of animal photography with emphasis on originality, vision and finding the humanity within your non-human subjects. Assignments focus on recognizing and choosing different approaches- from  portrait and documentary to editorial and educational- culminating with a self determined final project, all of which leads you to a better understanding of how to create meanignful images of our finned, furred and feathered neighbors.

Animals Through the Lens/Traer Scott
Semester: Spring 2011
Date(s); Saturday 03/26/11 - 03/26/11
Time: 1-3pm

The challenge for every photographer is clear and consistent: to create a timeless image, which speaks to the humanity of every viewer. Capturing that decisive moment with human subjects presents its own set of challenges, but what about when the lens is turned instead on animals? Join us to discover the challenges and joy of photographing animals with your lecturer, whose career has been devoted to photographing animals both mundane and exotic, domesticated and untamed. She shares her experiences working with animal subjects that are wildly diverse in shape, size and temperament -- some from the local animal shelter, and some from globetrotting expeditions requiring a balance of datelines, deadlines and begrudging subjects.

TScott_Arcade-2_sm

(The Arcade, Interior by Traer Scott)

The Ten Most Endangered Properties List from the Providence Preservation Society helps to call attention to significant historic and architectural resources citywide that are endangered by threats including deterioration, insufficient funds, insensitive public policy and inappropriate development–problems that jeopardize many properties throughout Providence.

This photography exhibit features striking photography by some of the most talented professional photographers in Rhode Island: Jan Armor, Michael Cevoli, Ryan Conaty Andrew Dernavich, Stephanie Ewens, Adam Hall, Deborah Hickey, Brian McDonald, Frank Mullin, and Traer Scott.

Using both black and white and color prints, and a variety of photographic formats, the photographers reveal unique details of the buildings and illustrate the story of their endangerment.

The Exhibit will be on display from  September 9th until October 16th at the Chabot Gallery, 379 Atwells Ave, Providence, RI on historic Federal Hill.

Gallery Night Opening Reception Thursday, September 16 from 5:00 pm- 9:00 p.m

Notes from the judging panel on "Natural History":

The 2010 Photography Panel felt that this photographer's work is universal, as well as beautiful. They were impressed by the "solid" and "cohesive" feel of the group of photographs submitted. They felt that the images transcend a mere technical approach to photography and reach a deeper level. They remarked that the photographs "take [you] in and hold [you] there" and described them as a beautiful and impressive body of work.
